WHETSTONE YOUTH COUNCIL

MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF THE
WHETSTONE YOUTH COUNCIL

A meeting held at the Council Offices, Cemetery Road, Whetstone on
Sunday 8th December 2002 at 7.00 p.m.

  Present:            Oliver Terrett (Chairperson)
Ashley Bakewell Tom Dunderdale Tom Gilbert Jaclyn Homer Emma Tapley
Apologies: Alexa Boor Richard Swain Hannah Wilson

1) MINUTES
The minutes of the meeting held on 10th November were confirmed as a true and accurate representation.

2) LOTTERY GRANT
The secretary informed youth councillors of their successful ‘Awards for All’ application to fund ‘Mobile Team Challenge’ equipment. We are due to receive a cheque for £4995 on 15th December. However, this only covers the total cost of the equipment and training, not the VAT. Therefore, we need to find another £874. We do have this amount in the bank, but it would make a big hole in the funds earmarked for other purposes. There are three other courses of action: negotiate with the suppliers, apply for an additional grant to cover the cost, or ask the parish council for the £500 grant we haven’t received yet. The secretary will try all three options. We have 12 months in which to spend the grant, so no immediate action is necessary.

3) OPTIONS 2002
Oliver and Emma gave reports on their recent involvement with Connexions at the Options 2002 careers event at the Walkers Stadium. Both enjoyed the experience acting as guides and advisors to the thousands of visitors who attended. They also learned a lot about the Connexions service, and ways young people can become involved. Fred Rennie (Connexions) was invited to attend a youth council meeting.

4) CONNEXIONS UPDATE
The secretary recently attended the ‘Introduction to Connexions’ and the ‘Connexions (APIR) Framework’ courses. These introductory training courses give an in-depth knowledge of Connexions and the role of the Personal Advisor.
Our application to Connexions for a consultant to advise the youth council on a long-term strategy and funding possibilities has been approved. Connexions have appointed Rob Hinxman, who works for the Council for Voluntary Youth Services, as our consultant. Secretary to arrange meetings between youth councillors and Rob.

5) FORTHCOMING MEETINGS
The youth council are invited to a CVS ‘Christmas Drop-In’ at their Enderby offices on 9th December, 12.00 til 2.00.
Carols around the Christmas Tree, also on 9th, at the Memorial Hall at 7pm.
County Youth Council (CYCLe) meeting at Winstanley Community College on 11th December at 7pm.
On Tuesday 17th December between 1pm and 7pm a public exhibition of the proposed traffic calming schemes for Whetstone will be held at the council offices. There will be opportunity to comment on the plans.
The December Parish Council meeting is scheduled for Thursday 19th December at 7.30.

6) OTHER BUSINESS
The secretary read out a letter from Trevor Wise of the County Council thanking members for attending the Vox Pop 2002 event, which was considered a great success.
The British Youth Council is promoting an international volunteering opportunity to reconstruct a youth club next summer in Palestine. Oliver seemed interested! But can we raise the money to send him?

Twinning with Botswana – although youth councillors played a major part in the initial meeting, the youth council has yet to receive the questionnaire that has gone out to other community groups in Whetstone. Secretary to investigate.

Meeting concluded at 8.30pm - Next meeting Sunday 12th January 2003 at 7.00pm
