1) MINUTES
The minutes of the meeting held on 12th January were confirmed as a true and accurate representation.2) YOUTH DEMOCRACY IN THE BLABY DISTRICT
Jane McCormick gave an insight into her role as Youth Democracy Worker for the Blaby District. She explained that her aim was to form a Blaby District Youth Forum, with representatives from Whetstone and Braunstone youth councils, Countesthorpe School Council, and members of informal youth groups within the district. The inaugural meeting is scheduled for some time in March at the District Council Chambers in Narborough. As this is a County Council strategy, the role the District Council will play is a little vague at present.
Jane suggested the youth council could become affiliated to ‘Young People First’, formerly ‘Youth Clubs Leicestershire’, which would give us access to information and advice. Member inquired about Youth Achievement Awards – administered by ‘Young People First’. Jane recommended we invite Julie Smith to a meeting to explain the procedures.
Member recruitment is an ongoing problem for the youth council, particularly younger members 13-14 year olds, but an area in which Jane could help through her involvement with Thomas Estley College. Emma and Oliver offered to address groups of Whetstone pupils at the school, bestowing the benefits and merits of the youth council in the community.3) OPERATION 'NO BROWN JUMPERS'
Jaclyn, Oliver and Emma gave their views on the initial consultation meeting with Rob Hinxman. They were impressed by the way Rob inspired discussion and ideas, and his instant understanding of our plight. Equally impressive was his comprehensive feedback report, which gave us a lot to think about and consider. The next stage is to develop a profile raising strategy – codenamed ‘No Brown Jumpers’.
The purpose of the consultation, kindly funded by Connexions, is to formulate a long-term policy for the youth council. The two main areas of concern are attracting young people, and getting adult supporters to help with the increasing workload. The projects in the pipeline should help with the former, but attracting adults is more of a problem.
Members suggested we arrange the next consultation for 2nd March.4) CONNEXIONS INTERVIEW TRAINING
Oliver and Emma reported on their recent interview training sessions with Connexions. When completed they will have the opportunity to interview prospective Connexions candidates. They found the training very informative and it will certainly prove useful when they eventually have to face a panel.5) MOBILE TEAM CHALLENGE
The equipment is due for delivery any day now. A youth council – parish council challenge should be the first team-building event – if we can get enough parish councillors interested! It was suggested we arrange it for a Thursday straight after a parish council planning meeting, when we are likely to get members of the planning committee involved. Given a snappy title and press release, it could prove a good publicity event.6) MULTI MEDIA DROP-IN
It was hoped we would have some of the new equipment on display for this meeting, but we are still awaiting the grant cheque from CYCLe. The group suggested a shopping list of equipment and games suitable to start-up the project.7) OTHER BUSINESS
