Whetstone May Day Parade and Festival
7th May 2001
The day was a huge success, yet again. Of course the weather helped
tremendously.
A big THANK YOU to the residents of Whetstone and surrounding areas who turned
up to support the event.
Special mention must be made of the organizing committee members:
Debbie Bailey who despite not living in Whetstone not only did the vast majority
of the administration, dealt with all the bookings, liased with all exhibitors,
crafters, parade entrants, etc. but gave up her holiday to help on the day to
ensure that it was a success. THANK YOU.
Dave Palmer and Martin Taylor of the Blaby and Whetstone Youth Centre who
provided their vast experience of organizing such events leading up to the day,
and worked extremely hard behind the scenes on the day. THANK YOU.
A profit of £811 made by the Youth Centre will go towards the £10,000
contribution needed to replace the outside ball court, which is thirty years
old. The total cost of a new court is £60,000, but it is hoped the outstanding
amount will come from grant applications. When the money is obtained the court
will be enlarged, Astro Turf laid, and have new fencing and floodlights so all
ball games from tennis to basketball can be played.
